Not weird when five AP Style errors in college led to an F. Chicago Style 16 also emphasizes the use of punctuation around the three-dotted ellipsis in section 13.48.
Grammarly, ProWritingAid.com, and Hemingway all tend to mess up when it comes to not leaving punctuation at the end of an ellipsis.
You say it looks weird, but write a sentence and then not put punctuation at the end Doesn't that confuse your readers Right And only if there is more to a sentence or paragraph should one use an ellipsis at the end of a sentence.
Admittedly, however, I will agree, I do use the four dots frequently to suggest a trailing thought.
