ICU-bed demand at the highest point of the pandemic

Multiple news sources reported Friday that no Intensive Care Unit beds are available for children in the 19-county Dallas-Fort Worth region according to the DFW Hospital Council Thursday.

There also are 75 staffed-ICU beds for adults. The majority of those entering treatment in hospitals, local officials say have not been vaccinated, reported The Dallas Morning News.

The website for Dallas affiliate WFFA also reported the area is down to about a dozen ICU beds available for adults.

All told, as many as 343 COVID-19 patients are on ventilators.

The demand for ICU beds goes beyond Covid-19

WFFA intereviewed DFW Hospital Council President Stephen Love who said, “Some people just do not understand we need ICU beds for car wrecks, heart attacks, strokes, etc., not just COVID-19.”

He said people need to get vaccinated, wear masks, stay out of large crowds and cancel meetings/conferences where there are more than 12 people.

Rapidly rising number of cases
