When We Pray, Jesus Said To Start Here
But do we really pay attention to this part of the Lord’s Prayer?
Recently, Gordon Dabbs, Ph.D., my Dallas, Texas, preacher, delivered the second sermon in a series he is calling Teach Us to Pray. To make a point, he read The Lord’s Prayer once as he spoke. Then he asked the congregation to re-read the whole prayer with him aloud.
He said many followers of Christ overlook the importance of the first two lines. We do not acknowledge our position on God’s organizational chart. We do not align ourselves correctly with the Creator.
Many of us miss what Jesus explains as the proper reverence to approach God in prayer.
We are not looking out for #1
“If you elevate anyone, even your own life above the Lord, you will not flourish. You will not have a pure fellowship with God,” Gordon said.
Most often, this happens because we humans do not comprehend the value of our holy relationship with God. Like if we could, we would skip to the part where we express our “needs.” The ones Jesus says in Matthew 6:8, God knows about before we even begin praying.
