I found her again, 31 years after the last time I saw her, in March of 2013. We first met in the 7th grade but she even told our English class that we'd never be together. Ever.

So she worked on getting her Family Nurse Practitioner's degree in AZ, but went home to CA every other weekend to work on the family business she was trying to close with her ex.

We talked umpteen times a day for almost four years. Then she graduated and moved back home. We talked all the way from AZ to CA when she drove back.

Then I didn't hear from her for two weeks. And that became the mantra. And she really was. Still is, almost four years later.

Now we are "friends," and she says she doesn't need to talk to me everyday like we did umpteen times a day.

So yes, they can work, but I think there's a half-life to living a half-life with/without someone who is not near. Be careful with your heart, Noël. Life is too precious and goes by too fast. There is not a lot of time for love, heart, and soul experiments, I have found.
